Bay Meadows is one of the single largest redevelopment sites remaining in the San Francisco Bay Area. The first phase of this comprehensive redevelopment was completed in 2003 and features office, retail and residential uses, including Park Place, an award-winning project. Bay Meadows Phase II, a development including for-sale residential homes, office and retail uses and a 15-acre public park system, was conceived to create a vibrant, high-quality mixed-use neighborhood around the consolidated Caltrain express station at Bay Meadows.
Bay Meadows exemplifies successful communication and participation in a public planning process involving distinct and diverse community and neighborhood groups. These efforts resulted in the Sierra Club including Bay Meadows in Building Better: A Guide to America's Best New Developments, Fall 2005, which identified the top 10 projects in the nation exemplifying best practices in development. The Greenbelt Alliance, the League of Women Voters of Central San Mateo and the Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo also support the transformation of the aging race track with its vast, barren parking lots into a vibrant, new mixed-use community.
